ABout the AUthor:
S.E. Hinton, author of The Outsiders, wrote the novel during her sophomore year (when she was only 15-years old) at Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The book was published in 1967, and it was her first novel published, even though she had written two other novels before The Outsiders.
"I wanted something to read." states S.E. Hinton. "I'd wanted to read books that showed teenagers outside of the life of, 'Mary Jane went to the prom.' She recalls, 'The books available just didn't read true, they didn't deal with the real lives of teenagers."
Before publishing The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton wrote many other novels. She had been writing since third grade, and her stories contained ideas about cowboys and horses.
The novel took about one and a half years to write, and she received a call from the publication company the day she graduated high school. The book was released while she was a freshman at the University of Tulsa.

About the Book:
Fourteen-year old Ponyboy is like any normal teenager boy who enjoys doing well in school, watching movies, and flirting with girls, but his brothers, his friends, and he are part of a local gang called the Greasers. (They are called the Greasers due to their long, greased-up hair.)
They run into many troubling incidents against rival gang, the Socs. The Socs, who are made up of the rich kids in town, get away with everything and beat up Greasers like Ponyboy. Trouble takes its toll on Ponyboy, and one night ends up changing his life as well as his friend's life.
